  • Scam Advice

It can unfortunately occur that scammers misuse the trivago brand, logos and/or domain, falsely presenting themselves as trivago employees, affiliates, agents or representatives. Under these false pretenses, they may try to get money from you.

We want to remind travelers how to recognize and safeguard themselves against online scams.

trivago is an online accommodation search platform. Irrespective of the situation or circumstances, we do not collect any payments and will never ask you for money, upfront payments neither as “traditional payment” nor in cryptocurrency.

See below for claims scammers may make. Please note, this is a non-exhaustive list:

    • You may be told to receive apartment keys and/or an apartment rental contract from trivago in exchange for an upfront payment, or deposit
    • You may be proposed a job offer, or task to work on, to earn commissions/bonus in exchange for an upfront payment, or investment

Such defrauding offers and claims are usually received via social networking services (SNS) such as WhatsApp and Telegram, text messaging, email, the internet, phone, etc. In any case, disregard any written or oral requests that you believe to be fraudulent, or suspicious.

See below for the advice we can provide:

    • Be vigilant. Don’t be duped by logos, domains, email addresses, imagery or text that sounds like trivago
    • Do not make a payment to anyone claiming to be trivago neither as traditional payment (bank transfer) nor in cryptocurrency
    • Don’t call unsolicited numbers: trivago is an online accommodation metasearch, so we don’t take bookings over the phone nor ask payments directly
    • Contact your bank/payment provider to see if they can help with regards to a charge-back or to cancel the transfer as soon as possible. Tell them that there has been a fraud and the details of the account that the money has been transferred to
    • Contact your local police/authorities, tell them that you were a victim of fraud and give them all the documents relating to the scam (such as messages, screenshots)
    • Contact the bank that the money was sent to. This can be determined by the bank account details that are provided by the scammer
    • Never reveal passwords, personal information or bank details over email, phone, messaging platforms on your phone like Whatsapp, Telegram or instant message. Similarly, be wary of clicking links and if you believe something to be a scam email and don’t open any attachments
    • More generally when paying for things online, in many countries using a credit card typically gives consumers greater protection should something go wrong
